English
  • Global Biodiversity Outlook title
  • GBO acronym
Description The flagship publication of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Remark
Periodic report on biological diversity proposed at the second meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, held in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 6-17 November 1995. The Executive Secretary constituted an advisory group to help guide the process of developing the report and to review drafts. The goal of the GBO is to provide a tool to contracting parties and other stakeholders to:

review progress made by the Convention toward its three objectives;

identify barriers to implementation;

help set priorities for implementation, and

communicate progress and advocate needs to decision makers.

The first edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook (Global Biodiversity Outlook 1) was published and launched in November 2001. At its sixth meeting, the Conference of the Parties welcomed the publication of the Global Biodiversity Outlook and decided that the Global Biodiversity Outlook should continue to be prepared as a periodic report on biological diversity and the implementation of the Convention, and be made available in all official United Nations languages.

Global Biodiversity Outlook 2 was launched in Curitiba, Brazil on 20 March 2006, during the opening session of the eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties. The report contains an overview of the status of the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity, progress towards the 2010 Biodiversity Target and its contribution to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

On 10 May 2010, the third edition of Global Biodiversity Outlook was launched: Global Biodiversity Outlook 3 (GBO-3). It summarizes the latest data on status and trends of biodiversity and draws conclusions for the future strategy of the Convention.
